Total Knee Replacement [ TKR ]
This is considered as the last option in the advanced stage of knee arthritis. It is a very effective way to control pain. In most of the patients, it reduces pain by 95 to 97% & in some, it gives complete pain relief. It increases the movement of the joint. After the surgery, the patient can walk & climb stairs comfortably. It can also correct the deformity of the joint & make them well aligned.
Though it is called Total joint Replacement, we do not replace all the joints. We remove the degenerated, worn part of the cartilage on the bone ends. We do this with the special jigs & saw blades. We fix the artificial prosthesis on the bone ends with Bone cement. These are made up of CO/CR or Titanium. Following surgery, the patient walks on these artificial surfaces. Hence he does not experience the pain.
This is a very safe surgery with a high success rate. Around 94 to 95% of joints survive for around 15 years. Which is considered a very high level of success. As with any surgery, this surgery also has its share of complications but its rate is very low. It can be kept to a minimum if the Surgeon is well-experienced, and has taken good training in the field of joint replacement. Surgery is done in the hospital in which there is a well-equipped operation theatre, Advanced instruments to perform the surgeries & trained staff to look after the patients.
Joint conserving surgery :
Osteotomy:
This is the surgery done to correct the deformity of bone. In this surgery, bone is cut & deformity is corrected. It is stabilised with a plate & screw. This corrects the malalignment in the joint & prevents the progression of arthritis.
Arthroscopy:
Arthroscopy is a surgery that uses small cuts and a camera to look at and fix joint problems. It’s less invasive, meaning less pain and faster recovery for patients. It’s often used for knees and other joints to treat issues like torn ligaments or damaged cartilage.
